Accessibility FAQ

MobileHCI is committed to providing an inclusive environment and we will do our best to accommodate requests for assistance. This page describes the accessibility features of MobileHCI2020, to help you make an informed decision about whether the conference will be accessible to you. Please contact us if your question is not answered here, or if the conference arrangements as described are not enough to allow you to attend.

This year’s MobileHCI will be held virtually. You will be able to join the conference remotely. This will mitigate some accessibility challenges that we face in the usual physical conference setting. For instance, challenges in attending the conference due to physical accessibility barriers or strong sensory stimuli from the venue’s physical environment should be minimal. But the fully virtual conference can introduce new challenges, such as the accessibility of online platforms  to connect to the conference. We will work with you to the best of our ability, to make the conference accessible.

Q
How do I communicate accessibility needs to MobileHCI organizers?
A
The Accessibility Chairs for MobileHCI are Hernisa Kacorri and Kotaro Hara, whose goal is to ensure the conference is accessible to everyone. When you register for the conference, there will be a registration question labeled, “Do you have a disability or chronic condition that impacts your access to ACM conferences, special interest groups, publications or digital resources?” When you answer ‘Yes’ to this question, a set of accommodation options will open up (e.g., sign language interpretation). Please select any options that will help make the conference accessible to you. The accessibility chairs will follow up to discuss your request in more detail. You can contact them directly at any time by emailing accessibility2020@mobilehci.acm.org.
Q
Who do I ask if my question is not answered here?
A
If there is specific accessibility information you would like to see here, or if you wish to discuss any conference accessibility requirements, please contact our Accessibility Chair, Hernisa Kacorri and Kotaro Hara by email: accessibility2020@mobilehci.acm.org, and someone will respond to you shortly.
Q
What technologies will be used for the virtual conference?
A
During the conference, videos will be played over Zoom and after each talk there will be time for a live Q&A session.
Q
Will sign language interpretation or captioning be available?
A
The conference will provide a team of sign language interpreters or captioners if requested by any attendees before the early registration deadline (Aug 19th). Please make your request as early as possible. Our Accessibility Chair will follow up with you to discuss your needs in more detail.
Q
Can a student volunteer assist me during the conference?
A
Student volunteers will be available to assist attendees with disabilities or chronic conditions. If you will need volunteer assistance at the conference, please indicate this on your conference registration form.
Q
What are the arrangements for presenters with accessibility needs?
A
The conference will have pre-recorded and interactive virtual formats. These will be based on existing video conference tools. Depending on which track the presenter will be presenting we will arrange for both a support on presenting the material and also during the actual presentation. We are happy to find solutions individually for your accessibility requests.  If you have accessibility requests related to giving a presentation, please contact Hernisa Kacorri and Kotaro Hara at accessibility2020@mobilehci.acm.org.
Q
Will speakers and audience members asking questions be using a microphone?
A
We are still working on the format of how speakers and the audience will interact for Q&A and will be updating this section. Question and Answering can be done in written questions and in auditory questions.
