Call for Demos

Important Dates:

  • Demo Submission Deadline: May 16th, 2018
  • Demo Notification: June 22nd, 2018
  • Demo Camera-ready: July 2nd, 2018

General Information

The MobileHCI 2018 Demonstration track provides a space for researchers and practitioners to bring hands-on experiences to conference attendees. We look forward seeing and trying interesting:

  • Functional prototypes of devices and systems
  • Mobile and wearable applications and services
  • New interaction techniques
  • Innovative examples of mobile experiences

The demo session will be the highlight of the conference reception.

Also, we want to provide a chance to suggest long-term demos that could be exhibited and used throughout the conference, for example:

  • Mobile applications that could enhance the conference experience for attendees or organizers
  • Bulky installations that are not worth bringing only for a demo session
  • Exhibits of the history of MobileHCI. This is of special interest this year, given that it is the 20th anniversary of the conference.

We encourage making your demonstration appealing and presenting it in an innovative way, to attract the participation of attendees.

Note that the demonstrations must be about research, not business. The demo forum is not an opportunity for marketing or sales presentations. Business-related visibility is only available for sponsors.

Preparing the Submission

Your extended abstract should be submitted by May 16th to the New Precision Conference System, using the SigCHI Extended Abstracts format. Submissions do not need to be anonymous. The submission should include 2 separate documents:

  • Document 1: maximum of six-page description (including figures) of the demonstrated system, max 4 MB. If the system has been demonstrated before, describe if there are any changes to the proposed demo. References do not count against paper length
  • Document 2: specification of the practicalities (1-2 pages)
    • Specify which of the default facilities you intend to use and whether you have additional wishes regarding equipment. The Demonstrations Chairs will investigate infrastructure and equipment possibilities for the accepted demonstrations.
    • Specify if the demo is meant for the demo session or as a long-term demonstration. Long-term demos need to be properly justified.
    • If you intend to gather data during the demonstration, please describe how you will consider research ethics and data privacy.
    • Contact information of the presenters.
    • Description of the Equipment and Resources that you will bring.
  • Video (optional): a brief video (2 minutes maximum) showcasing your demo.

Please note, accepted full and shorts papers are also granted a place in the demo session by default if the content of the paper includes interactive constructions ready to be demonstrated. To indicate that accepted full and shorts paper authors want to utilize this opportunity, they only need to submit a one-page specification of the infrastructural requirements (item 2 above). In case authors would like to have an additional extended abstract published, they can also decide to submit an up to 8-page description in extended abstract format. Self-plagiarism must naturally be avoided.

Participants are expected to bring the necessary equipment to the conference site with them. By default, the conference will provide:

  • One table
  • One poster board with enough space for one A0-sized poster in portrait orientation
  • One power outlet
  • Wireless internet connectivity. If your demo heavily relies on Wi-Fi connectivity, we recommend you to bring your own Wi-Fi router.

The chairs will do their best to accommodate requests for additional setup requirements. Please ask!

Selection Process

The selection process for MobileHCI demos is curated, that is, selected by an esteemed committee, but not sent out to external reviewers. The curated demo content will be selected from demonstration submissions, accepted papers, as well as projects invited by the demo chairs. Authors will not receive formal feedback on their submission other than the selection decision. Confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the selection process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until the start of the conference.

Archived in Adjunct Proceedings

Accepted submissions will be included in the ACM Digital Library as part of the MobileHCI 2018 Adjunct Proceedings. Please submit your camera-ready version without any copyright notice. Subsequently, ACM will send you a copyright form, which you have to complete. Once completed, we will provide you with the new copyright information to be put into your paper. You can then submit the final version (including the new copyright notice) through the submission system.

More Information

Submission of the final camera-ready version includes, and is not complete without, giving us permission to distribute your final camera-ready version as described above. This permission is given when submitting the final version of your work via the Conference Review System. Upon acceptance, you have to present your demo at the conference. At least one author of a demo must register by the early registration deadline.
